Talk about following in someone's footsteps. That's the story of George Trapp, who matched his older brother and fellow PCC Sports Hall of Famer John Q. Trapp by becoming a state tourney MVP for a PCC basketball state champion team. A forward, Trapp helped the 1968-69 Lancers win its second state title in a 3-year span (sandwiching a state runner-up in 1967-68). The All-American Trapp had the distinction of playing in back-to-back, state championship games under two different PCC head coaches, legend Jerry Tarkanian in 1968 and then Dan Ayala in 1969. The two-time, All-Western State Conference selection helped the Lancers go 58-8 in his two seasons. He remains fifth on the Lancers’ all-time scoring list with 1,142 points, averaging a consistent 17.3 points per game. After going on to score 1,000 points at Long Beach State under Tarkanian, he was the fifth overall selection in the 1971 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Trapp played six years in the NBA with the Hawks and Detroit Pistons. George beat his brother into being selected in the Long Beach State Hall of Fame in 1991 (John chosen in 1994).
