Saturday's season opener marks the 56th football meeting between Pasadena City College and Long Beach City College. The Lancers have never played more contests against a single opponent and hold a 29-24-2 all-time series edge.
Despite the rivalry, the two teams haven't met in a decade with PCC winning, 39-27, in a 2006 Mission Conference game. The conference was disbanded after 2007 and the SCFA was created in 2008. LBCC last beat the Lancers in 2005, 31-10.
This is the first time that the colleges will meet in a season opener. The last time the Lancers won a season opener was in 2011 against Glendale (49-28).
PCC head coach Tom Maher holds a modest 1-6 record v. the Vikings, winning his only matchup during the Lancers' 10-1 Mission Conference championship season in 2001. The Lancers won in their regular season finale over LBCC, 55-14.
Long Beach captured the National Central League title last year and advanced to the SoCal Regional championship game, losing to Saddleback. Vikings head coach Brett Peabody has compiled a 19-4 record the past two seasons.
LBCC was ranked No. 2 in the JC Athletic Bureau pre-season state poll.
The Lancers are in their first year playing in the SCFA American Metro League. Last season, they were members of the National Northern League.
