History appeared to be on Pasadena City College's side going into its SCFA American Metro League football game Saturday afternoon. But winless Glendale, a school that has lost more times v. PCC than any other opponent, turned the tables on the Lancers and sent them to a 25-3 defeat at Sartoris Field.
PCC dropped to 3-4 overall and likely cost itself any chance of competing for the AML title in falling to 1-2 in the division. Glendale (1-6, 1-2) outscored Pasadena, 19-0, in the second half behind three touchdowns.
The Lancers fumbled three times and were intercepted twice. Tied 3-3 in the second quarter, a blocked punt by Glendale set up an 18-yard field goal by Michael Selsor that gave the Vaqueros a 6-3 halftime lead. PCC continued to stay in a defensive struggle until Glendale made it 12-3 on quarterback David Arriaga's 6-yard TD run on a bootleg with 1:12 left in the third quarter.
PCC made a costly error on a fumble by reserve quarterback Jett Even during a sack that gave Glendale the ball on the Pasadena 21. That led to a 2-yard touchdown pass by Arriaga to tight end Solomon Nwanko that increased the Vaqueros lead to 18-3 just 2:39 into the fourth quarter. On the next series, starting QB Jesse Hanckel had his midfield pass intercepted by Leon Flintroy who returned it to the PCC 43. That turnover produced a 23-yard TD run by Torrence Brumfield that put the game out of reach.
One of the few brightspots for the Lancers was kicker Enrique Lozano, who boomed a 43-yard field for PCC's only points late in the first quarter. The score was the result of one of the only sustained drives by the Lancers. Hanckel completed passes of 31 yards and 16 yards to running back Jacob Fimbres to set up the kick.
On defense, linebacker Jasper Chavez made 11 tackles (and forced a fumble), linebacker Tyler Poythress had 10 tackles, and Daeqwan Bailey added nine tackles, a pass knockdown, and he blocked an extra point. Bailey, a defensive tackle, leads PCC in overall tackles with 50 this season.
PCC hosts Los Angeles Southwest College on Saturday, Oct. 29 in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Robinson Stadium.
