Pasadena City College's football team matched a program low in allowing the most points in a game Saturday night in a 69-20 loss to San Bernardino Valley at Robinson Stadium. PCC trailed 35-0 after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime.
SBVC (4-1) was led by state touchdown passing leader and quarterback Armando Herrera, who amazingly matched his own school record for TD passes in a game set a week ago with seven scoring strikes. Herrera, who now has 23 TD throws in five games, completed 20 of 30 passes for 357 yards and spread his end zone connections to six different receivers. He hit DeJuan Moon for an 80-yard TD throw in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines intercepted two PCC quarterbacks four times, including a 98-yard interception TD return by JaQuere Williams.
Pasadena (2-3) lost its third straight game. The 69 points allowed matched the most ever given up by a PCC team set originally in a loss at Grossmont College in 2010. Since that year, PCC teams have surrendered 50 or more points a stunning 21 times and twice in the past three weeks.
PCC overcame a rough first 30 minutes with three second-half touchdowns. At the start of the third quarter, SBVC tried a fake punt that resulted in a Kobe Quiroga tackle allowing PCC great field position at the Wolverines' 36 yard-line. The questionable decision set up a short drive and a 4 -yard TD run by Drake Beasley (43 yards in 14 attempts overall). The score also ended a San Bernardino run of 121 unanswered points over a 6-quarter span going back to last week's rout over LA Southwest (72-0).
Wide receiver Drew Pendleton hauled in a 56-yard bomb from reserve quarterback Mario Bobadilla and added a 2-point conversion catch. Starting QB Isaia Ah-Hing scored on a 2-yard keeper with three seconds left in the game. Sultaan Sullivan rushed for 59 yards in eight carries while Moses Gonzalez contributed 39 yards in nine carries. Rodney Collier totaled 141 yards in five kick returns and had a 98-yard TD return nullified on a special teams penalty in the second quarter.
PCC controlled the ball for 42 minutes but only because SBVC scored on several big plays and quick strikes.
Of what few defensive plays that stood out for PCC were two tackles behind the line of scrimmage by lineman Lionel Humphrey III and a blocked extra point kick by lineman Jayson Jones.
The Lancers take their bye week off next Saturday and then return to the field for the PCC Homecoming Game on Saturday, Oct. 13 against Allan Hancock College. Kickoff for the SCFA American Pacific League opener is 4 p.m. at Robinson Stadium.
PCC GRIDIRON NOTES: Sullivan is the team's rushing leader with 344 yards in 60 carries and is averaging a solid 5.7 yards per game...In the last three defeats, PCC has been outscored 155-48...The team is second to last in the state (67th) in defending the pass, allowing 300.8 yards per game. In home games, the team has allowed 16 passing TDs compared to only one given up in two road games...PCC's defense also has created only three turnovers all season as opponents have handled the ball well. In comparison, the Lancers have surrendered 13 turnovers (11 interceptions thrown)...One area the team has been efficient is fourth down conversions. The Lancers are 10-for-14 (71 percent) and the only team in the state in double digits in that category...Allan Hancock is 3-1 this season and could be the toughest foe for PCC in the 5-game, American Pacific League schedule.
