Yu, Men's Basketball Puts Scare Into State No. 4 ELAC

The state No. 4-ranked East Los Angeles College men's basketball team got all it could handle from visiting Pasadena City College Friday night. The Lancers traded baskets with the Huskies for most of the 40 minutes but their bid for an upset ended with four ELAC free throws in the final 1:02 that sent PCC to a 75-71, South Coast Conference North Division defeat.

The Lancers (5-21, 1-6) employed their secret weapon off the bench in Taiwanese freshman guard Aaron Yu. Conference leader ELAC had trouble guarding the quick release of Yu's long range shots. Yu (pictured) mixed in some quick plays to the basket with five treys as he scored his PCC high of 21 points. He added five steals to fluster the Huskies' offense.

Lancers sophomore forward Darrell Childs hit a short jumper with 1:12 left that tied it 71-71. Two free throws each by Chima Wami and Jarrell Tate ended PCC's efforts.

Childs continues to be an all-conference candidate with a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. First-year guard Todd Barnes added 10 points and frosh point guard Tey Williams totaled seven points, seven assists and five rebounds. East LA (22-3, 5-1) was led by Iziahiah Sweeny with 25 points.

At El Camino College-Compton Center on Feb. 10, Childs scored a team season high 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 90-71 Lancers loss. Childs, a transfer from LA Trade Tech, made 14 of 21 shots from the field and was the only PCC player in double figures.

Reserve freshman forward Jordan Hackett added six points and seven rebounds while first-year guard Jamon Moore had eight points, seven assists, and six boards.

The Lancers close out the 2015-16 season on Friday, Feb. 19 as they host Mt. San Antonio College. Tip-off is 7 p.m. following the women's game.
