Last year, Dylan Che showed signs of becoming a solid racer after a 78th place finish at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational. While Che didn't qualify for the 2017 CCCAA State meet, he has come back as a sophomore with the intentions of being a No. 1 runner for the Pasadena City College men's cross country team in 2018.
Che placed 13th overall out of 93 runners at the season-opening Ventura Invitational held Friday at Arroyo Verde Park's 4-mile course. Che ran a time of 24 minutes, 15.36 seconds and helped the Lancers place sixth out of 10 scoring teams at the meet. Riverside City College won the team meet while Oxnard's Ricardo Torres won the individual race in 22:31.92.
The Lancers sport a 13-player roster, including six sophomores. Despite the return of experienced runners, only one other PCC harrier finished in the top half of the field and it was a freshman. Giovanni Guajardo (Temple City High) placed 29th at 25:14.54.
The rest of the Lancers finished as follows: freshman Jose Campos (Baldwin Park HS) in 47th, 26:47.71, newcomer William Su (Newbury Park) in 59th, 27:37.49, sophomore Trevor Abe in 65th, 27:57.56, and letterman Izaq Davolt in 84th, 34:02.68. Only six runners participated in the first race.
PCC is directed by head coach Innocent Egbunike, in his third season in charge of both the men's and women's cross country programs.
