The Pasadena City College women's badminton team ran its South Coast Conference winning streak to 44 in a row dating back to the 2014 season with easy victories over Compton, 21-0, on Friday and 18-3 at host El Camino on March 22.
At Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium, the No. 1 doubles team of Xiaoming Yao and Nicole Ching continued to play well with wins of 21-7, 21-16 over Compton's Jennifer Lopez and Princess Tovar, and 21-4, 21-6 over Kimberly Lara and Laura Reyes. With Compton playing with just four players, PCC head coach Jen Ho played Sophia Nguyen at No. 1 singles and she scored a pair of wins over Lopez, 21-6, 21-4, and Tovar, 21-4, 21-7. Huyen Diep, Angie Li and Chau Lam each won two singles matches while the No. 2 doubles squad of Jessica Lee and Emilee Kintanar rolled to two victories.
Against El Camino, Yao at her usual No. 1 singles beat Sunya Unger, 21-6, 21-5, and ended up winning by default over the Warriors' No. 1 Lauren Ritter, who she defeated 21-15 in the opening set, but Ritter fell to injury in set 2. Playing at No. 2, Nguyen downed Ritter, 21-16, 21-10, and had no issues in defeating Unger, 21-5, 21-5. Ching beat Angie Vargas, 21-10, 21-17 and Huyen Diep also beat Vargas, 21-15, 21-18. Kintanar won in No. 6 singles, 21-15, 21-12 over Riley Arrowhead. For El Camino, Christina Johnson at No. 5 singles won both of her matches for two of her team's three team points.
The Lancers swept the doubles with Yao-Ching beating Ritter-Unger, 21-19, 21-10 and Johnson-Vargas, 21-14, 21-8. Nguyen-Diep played very well and beat Ritter-Unger, 21-15, 21-7 and then downed Johnson-Vargas, 21-5, 21-13.
Coach Jen Ho's Lancers (5-1 overall, 5-0 in SCC play) host De Anza College in a non-conference match on Monday, April 1. PCC struggled in a 19-2 loss to the Dons in their first encounter on March 15 up North.
