For the 17th consecutive season and 21st time in 22 seasons under head coach Joe Peron, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team is headed to the postseason. The Lancers earned the No. 14 seed and will host 19th seed San Diego City College Wednesday, Feb. 21 in Round 1 of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
PCC downed Rio Hondo, 76-50, in its season finale on Feb. 16 to improve to 17-13 overall and finish in fourth place in the South Coast Conference North Division at 5-5. The mighty SCC had seven teams receive playoff berths in the 19-team field, including four from the North in #2 Mt. San Antonio, #4 LA Trade Tech and #10 East Los Angeles.
The Lancers are a tough home team in the postseason with a 22-4 career mark under Peron, who took over the program in the 1996-97 season. PCC is 20-2 in all playoff games played at the HP Gym (opened in 1999). Peron is 35-19 in career playoff games, 27-13 in regional play. Pasadena is facing the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference South Division champions in San Diego, a team that was undefeated in conference at 8-0 but just 13-13 overall.
PCC is paced by South Coast Conference leading scorer and sophomore center Alisa Shinn, who averages 20.9 points and is sixth in the state in rebounding at 13.1 boards per game. Shinn had one of her best all-around games in the regular season finale when she scored 22 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, dished out six assists and blocked five shots. Also at Rio Hondo, sophomore point guard Samaiyah Abdullah added 15 points and seven assists while frosh guard Elise Ortega had 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman shooting guard Jade Lin contributed 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Knights are led by sophomore point guard E'maniee Powell, chosen the PCAC South MVP. In the regular season, Powell averaged 11.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while running the Knights' offense. She made a team-best 41 3-pointers and averaged 1.5 steals per game. Andrea Aguilar-Montalban was named PCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
SDCC's leading scorer/rebounder Breeana Gafare (12.6 points, 8.6 rebounds), Angeleah Johnson, and Mariah Wonders were selected to the All-PCAC South First Team, while Desiree Prado was picked for the Second Team. PCC is 2-0 in its history v. San Diego. The schools last met in 2013 when the Lancers won 83-51 at the Irvine Valley Tournament. This is just the second time in PCC's playoff history it is facing an opponent from the PCAC.
The winner of Wednesday's playoff plays at another PCAC school in No. 3 seed Mt. San Jacinto College (27-2) on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Lancers were beaten 91-58 by the North Division co-champion Eagles in December at the College of the Desert Winter Classic.
