Sophomore Melissa Cienega keeps on winning while the Pasadena City College women's swimming and diving team took its first setback in South Coast Conference dual meets, losing to Mt. San Antonio, 173-90, while beating host Rio Hondo, 135-111, on Friday.
The Lancers (3-1 in SCC duals) mustered just five wins in the double dual meet, three by Cienega, who placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.76), 100 freestyle (55.47), and 500 freestyle (5:15.45). Letterman Jocelyn Jo won the 200 individual medley (2:18.29) and the squad of Sharon Perez, Jo, Lindsay Jensen and Cienega grabbed first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.33).
On March 10 at the College of Marin 13th Mariner Invitational, PCC placed second among six teams with 360 points, but finished behind champion Shasta with 659 points. The Lancers won seven events, three again by Cienega who is dominating her competition in most of the events she enters. Cienega hit the wall first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.05), the 500 freestyle (5:18.44), and 100 freestyle (55.83). Jo won the 50 breaststroke (33.15) and 100 IM (1:05.67) while Perez was first in the 50 freestyle (26.98). The Lancers won the 200 freestyle relay (2:11.32).
On March 9, Coach Terry Stoddard's Lancers split a non-conference double dual meet, defeating host De Anza, 115-84.5 and losing to Diablo Valley, 162-64. In that meet, PCC swam at the 2018 state meet site as Cienega won the 1,650 freestyle (18:32.96) but was defeated in the 400 IM by DVC's Anita Alvarez while placing second. Jo was a winner in the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.76.
PCC returns to conference duals this Friday, Mar. 23 when it hosts Chaffey and East Los Angeles Colleges at the Aquatic Center. Meet time is 12:30 p.m.
