Women's Volleyball Sweeps 2 At PCC Quad

Pasadena City College women's volleyball head coach Mike Terrill couldn't have asked for a better script for his first home matches at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. At the PCC Quad Tournament Wednesday, his Lancers dominated both Citrus and Ventura Colleges in sweeps to up the Lancers record to 6-5 this year.

Pasadena opened things with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-12 rout over Citrus. The Lancers served 15 aces, seven by outside hitter Vanessa Lopez, who added 11 digs and three kills. Outside hitter Paige Clingaman added eight kills while middle blocker Lania Potter contributed six kills and four block assists.

In the nightcap, PCC had a similarly good time in defeating Ventura, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17. Clingaman pounded 14 kills (hit .312) while Potter had nine kills (.316) and six blocks. Lopez chipped in nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Hannah Clarke dished out 26 assists to go with 10 digs, two aces and two kills. Libero Michelle Boyd totaled 17 digs (and seven set assists). Defensive specialist Monica Hernandez had 11 digs.

"This was such a team night," Terrill said. "We were agressive on the service line, we passed well, we blocked well, and it was just a complete effort by everyone. We had been looking good our last few practices and you can tell it was going to tranfer into the matches. Lania and Paige both had big performances and led us to the wins."

At the 31st San Diego Mesa Invitational held September 9-10, the Lancers finished 1-2, sweeping Cerro Coso, 25-13, 25-11, 25-15, for their lone win. Moorpark handed the Lancers a 4-set loss, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-11 and Bakersfield swept PCC, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17. Against Cerro Coso, Hernandez twirled a team season-high nine aces, Potter had 13 kills, Boyd made 15 digs, and Clarke set 32 assists. Lopez picked up nine kills and eight digs while letterman opposite Shawna Ogata knocked down eight kills.

Against Moorpark, Lopez scored 11 kills while Boyd added 15 digs and served five aces. Clingaman totaled 10 kills. In the Bakersfield match, Clingaman added eight kills and Boyd and Lopez had 11 digs each.
