The South Coast Conference North Division champion and 15th-seeded Pasadena City College women's volleyball team could not keep up with No. 2 host MiraCosta as the Lancers season concluded Tuesday in a Southern California Regional Playoff Round 1 loss, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.
For the second time this year, the PCAC North champion Spartans (25-6) swept the Lancers, hitting an efficient .337 overall. Hayley Huntsman dished out 29 assists with nine kills and nine digs while Claire Kinder hit .429 with nine kills and three aces to pace the MiraCosta attack. MiraCosta continued its 18-match winning streak.
PCC (18-10) advanced to the Final 16 with a sweep over #18 seed Ventura in the Play-In Round on Saturday. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Clingaman, who had 10 kills in the Ventura win, scored 11 kills and hit a superb .688 in 16 attempts against MiraCosta. Lania Potter added five kills and Vanessa Lopez served all three of the team's aces. Both Kendall Schmedes and Kelsey Sarreal collected nine digs each.
One problem for the Lancers were their lack of overall attack attempts due to many quick strike points made by the Spartans. PCC ended up with just 79 attempts. The Lancers were 6-6 this year in matches with less than 100 attacks and 12-4 in those with more hits placed in the century mark zone. MiraCosta's strong net presence resulted in PCC's two lowest kill totals of the season, 19 in the first matchup and 23 in the playoff encounter.
Lancers head coach Mike Terrill is 35-19 overall in his two seasons directing the program, improving on his first season by seeing his team advance to the postseason and win a playoff match. He was named the SCC North Coach of the Year.
