The Pasadena City College women's volleyball team used Sophomore Night as a return to some of the efficient play it had turned in from earlier this season. The state #23 Lancers swept Cerritos, 25-20, 25-11, 25-17, Wednesday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers stopped a 3-match losing streak and improved to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in South Coast Conference play. PCC hit .304, the best by the squad in more than a month.

Pasadena welcomed the return of outside hitter Janell Currier, who had missed seven previous matches due to injury, and the letterman delivered with 12 kills (.333), two blocks and she had a wild serving run of four consecutive aces in the second set. Another top performance was turned in by sophomore libero Grace Crawford with 17 digs and five set assists. Crawford is just the third PCC player to ever record 300 or more digs in each of her two seasons. She is just 26 digs shy of breaking the Lancers career record for digs (658, Jessica Vargas 2010-2011).

Freshman outside hitter Nalani Young pounded a team-high 13 kills (.312) while frosh opposite Kaitlyn Kartsen tallied eight kills (.368) and two blocks. First-year middle blocker Maggie Harris contributed five kills and three block assists.

Two players who were part of the sophomore group were defensive specialist Emily Ahedo, who served three aces and made six digs, and DS Mia Groves (freshman eligible but will transfer academically after this season), who also spun three aces to go with five digs. Second-year setter Nikki Hernandez dished out 33 assists and had seven digs.

Pasadena finishes the round robin part of the SCC schedule on Friday, Nov. 8 at East Los Angeles College (6 p.m.). Coach Mike Terrill's Lancers clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming SCC Championship Tournament.
