Alvarez Comes Through On Sophomore Day For WWP

One of three players playing likely for the final time at the Aquatic Center, Fernanda Alvarez made the most of Sophomore Day as she scored three goals to help the Pasadena City College women's water polo team defeat East Los Angeles, 10-7, Wednesday afternoon. The Lancers even their South Coast Conference record to 3-3.

Alvarez leads PCC with 43 goals this season. The letterman scored on her first two attempts while the team started the game by netting goals on each of its first five shots to take a 5-1 lead. Carolina Lopez capped that run with a score with 3:21 left in the second quarter. 

ELAC kept coming back, first cutting it to 5-4 before Chloe O'Connor scored twice in the third quarter to up it back to 7-4. Alvarez took a pass from Rebecca Lange and fired in a score that made it 9-5 with 6:24 left in the game. Lange had a goal and three assists while O'Connor totaled four goals. Lopez had two goals. 

PCC goalie Jackie Collier continued her fine season as she made 14 saves in three quarters of play. Alvarez, Meleenae Goumrikian and Erandy Wells were honored in a pre-game ceremony as the team's returning sophomores. 

The Lancers (6-12 overall) won one of four games at the Citrus Tournament played Oct. 19-20. PCC tallied five times in the fourth quarter to beat Chaffey, 6-4. With 2:46 left, Alvarez broke a 3-3 tie with her second goal. Up 5-4, O'Connor scored an insurance goal with 29 seconds remaining. Second-string goalie Erin Coad had her best day of the season, making 15 saves in two quarters of play. 

PCC participates in the 4-game, Battle at the Beach Tournament Oct. 25-26 at Fullerton College.
