Another New League--SCFA American Mountain--For Football in 2020

PCC football will be playing in the American Mountain League in 2020.
PCC football will be playing in the American Mountain League in 2020.

For the sixth time in 13 years, the Pasadena City College football team is changing location inside the Southern California Football Association (SCFA).

Ever since the SCFA came into being in 2008, the Lancers have bounced around the different leagues in SoCal, starting with two stints in the National Northern (2008-2009 and 2013-2015) that sandwiched a move to the National Southern in 2010-2012.

In 2016-17, PCC was dropped to the American Metro League, meaning it could no longer compete for the CCCAA state title or advance to the state playoffs. In 2018-19, it was pack your bags to the American Pacific, and in 2020, the Lancers once again have been relocated into the American Mountain League.

PCC will compete in an eclectic grouping with familiar locals in Compton and Los Angeles Southwest and get to use a AAA travel guide to face such far away league opponents as College of the Desert, Grossmont, Mt. San Jacinto, and Victor Valley. Even more bizarre is that the Lancers four non-league opponents, at least from a proximity view, seem like more natural competitors in Cerritos, LA Valley, Santa Monica and fellow 210 freeway local Citrus. Only Desert (non-league) and Santa Monica (league game) are teams that the Lancers faced in 2019 when they finished 6-4 overall and in second place in the American Pacific League at 4-1.

Among teams that are close in location but not on the PCC schedule are Glendale College, East Los Angeles, LA Harbor, West Los Angeles, Pierce, El Camino, Long Beach City, and Mt. San Antonio.

The '20 season opener at Cerritos College on Saturday, Sept. 5 is the first meeting between the two colleges since 2015. PCC then kicks off its Robinson Stadium home opener on Sept. 12 when it faces LA Valley. The last time those two programs met was in 2011. The 6-game, American Mountain League schedule begins on on Oct. 3 at LA Southwest. It's only been three years since PCC faced the Cougars. The final two league games will be the first-ever encounters on the gridiron between the Lancers at Victor Valley (Nov. 7) and at home in the regular season finale v. Mt. San Jacinto on Nov. 14.

Last season, PCC beat Desert, 22-13, in the '19 season opener and routed Santa Monica, 30-2, in week #8.
