Carmen Ung broke her own Pasadena City College women's swim record in the 100-yard breaststroke and in the process set a new standard in the event at the 19th Pasadena Invitational held April 4-6 at the Aquatic Center. She also set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke in a magnificent overall performance.

The freshman Ung actually finished in a dead heat to tie for the win in her speciality 100 breaststroke event with Orange Coast sophomore Meghan Kluck as the two touched the wall at 1:05.58. However, Ung broke her PCC school record by .09 of a second and the two swimmers beat last year's record of Santa Barbara's Sarah Parson by a large 1.86 seconds (1:07.44). The performances could be a precursor of what might be another great battle between the two for the CCCAA State gold medal in the event next month.

In the 200 breaststroke, Ung stormed to a 2:25.21, second-place finish, which in other years might have won the event if not for Allan Hancock's Izzie Fraire breaking the meet/pool record with a time of 2:23.65. But Ung's swim shattered the PCC mark set just last year by Jocelyn Jo (2:26.77) by 1.56 seconds.

Ung helped the Lancers finish in ninth place out of 18 teams that took part in the annual big invitational. Defending state champion Orange Coast won its second straight Pasadena title with 854.50 points. PCC scored 109 points primarily due to Ung's individual meet high of 81 points. Besides her record swims, the talented speedster placed a close second in the 100 freestyle (53.77), which is now the third fastest mark in school history, grabbed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.52) and scored a tie for fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.30, sixth on the all-time list). 

Yvette Rosales placed 10th overall in the 200 butterfly with a personal best time of 2:43.97.

Ung, Cluck and Fraire were the only women's swimmers to break a meet record at this year's event.

Coach Terry Stoddard's Lancers take part in the South Coast Conference Championships at Mt. San Antonio College April 18-20.
