In a battle of top teams on Wednesday night, state #13-ranked Santa Barbara City College took control late in the first set and never looked back in defeating #9 Pasadena City College's women's volleyball team, 25-18, 25-16, 25-15, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers (6-3 record) lost at "The Patt" for the first time this season in six matches and ended a 7-match win streak at home dating back to last year. The Vaqueros are one of five undefeated teams still left in the state, now at 6-0.

PCC hit just .049 compared to SBCC's .255 as frosh outside hitter Bobbie Torres was one of the few standouts as she scored 11 kills, served the team's lone ace and made 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Savannah Curtis tallied three kills and made five blocks (two solos), Payton Scott made seven kills and two blocks, Izzy Taylor four kills, Mahrie Bedjakian two kills and a block, JanetMarie Reyes set three assists and had three digs, and Juyeon Lee totaled 14 digs.

While the Lancers used 15 players overall, unavailable due to an injury in a previous match was recently named CCCWVCA State Player of the Week Delaney Blied, who is expected back in action soon.

PCC jumped ahead 16-13 in the opening set, but was outscored 12-2 by SBCC to fall behind 1-0. Pasadena's attack was foiled constantly as the Vaqueros prevailed in many longer rallies. Santa Barbara's Stephanie Groswirt (14 kills, .444, and three blocks), Bayley Padia (11 kills, .333, nine digs), and libero Valeria Bellodas (17 digs) led impressive play on both offense and defense.

All three of the Lancers losses this season have come against Western State Conference North Division teams with #5 LA Mission and #12 Moorpark the others.

Pasadena next hosts Irvine Valley on Friday, Sept. 12 in a 6 p.m. non-conference contest.
