PCC's Raigosa Named SCFA Defensive Player Of The Week

Pasadena City College football team safety Osvaldo Raigosa, who made two interceptions in the team's 30-27 comeback win over Citrus, was selected as the SCFA Defensive Player of the Week #4 for games played on Sept. 24-25. He is the second Lancer in the last three weeks to be honored with the region's defensive award.

Raigosa, a redshirt freshman from Gabrielino High, leads the state in interceptions with four. Against Citrus, his 23-yard pickoff return set up the game-winning field goal by teammate Cristian Contreras late in the fourth quarter.

Raigosa is second on the Lancers in overall tackles with 20 and his 12 solos are also second on the squad.

He joins cornerback Kaydon Spens and receiver Jeremiah Hartfield as SCFA Award winners this season. Both were recognized for Week #2.

FOOTBALL RATES WELL

In state statistics, the Lancers (3-1) are 19th in total offense, 14th in points average, 13th in rushing, and sixth in third down efficiency (47 percent).

PCC was ranked tied for No. 25 with Cerritos on this week's CCCSIA State Football Top 25. The Lancers are the only American Division team on the rankings.

SCFA MOUNTAIN LEAGUE OPENER ON SATURDAY v. DESERT/MEMORY LANE--ROSE CITY CLASSIC BOWL

Under the direction of head coach Robert Tucker, the Lancers start their SCFA Mountain League schedule against College of the Desert this Saturday, Oct. 2 in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Robinson Stadium. (No spectactors are currently allowed inside the stadium per the Pasadena Area Community College District policy).

PCC is 4-1 in the all-time series between the two colleges. The Lancers won the 2019 season opener in their last meeting, a 22-13 PCC victory. Desert is 1-2 and did not play last Saturday as its game v. Glendale was postponed due to a COVID-19-related issue.

Pasadena and COD's first meeting on the gridiron was an interesting one in 1992. The Lancers, who officially went 10-1 that season, were not selected for the postseason so then PCC athletic director Ernie Romine decided to create a bowl for the team to play. In the first and only Rose City Classic Bowl at on-campus Horrell Field, the Lancers edged Desert, 28-27, as Pasadena quarterback Edward Hervey was named game MVP. The program's all-time winningest head coach Dennis Gossard directed that Lancers squad.

At PCC, Hervey was a 2-sport start as he was the South Coast Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Year as a sprinter in the 200 and 400 meters. He went on to a scholarship at USC. He was on the taxi squad and received a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Dallas Cowboys and then embarked on a successful career in the Canadian Football League. Hervey was a 2-time, All-Star, twice was on Grey Cup champion teams, and then became a league general manager of the Edmonton Eskimos, winning the 2015 league championship.
