Four Men's Hoopsters From PCC's SoCal Regional Finalist Team Gain Scholarships

Four members of a 2022-2023 Pasadena City College men's basketball team that reached the Southern California Regional Finals are moving on to 4-year universities with scholarships.

All-State honorable mention and All-South Coast Conference selection Jonathan Tchengang signed with NCAA Division II Cal State University Stanislaus. Tchengang, a transfer wing from MiraCosta College who played at Martin Luther King High (Riverside), made the 11-man, squad after leading the Lancers this season in scoring (13.3 points average) and rebounding (8.5 per contest). 

Point guard Jayden Winfrey, who was an All-SCC selection after finishing fourth in the state in assists per game, is headed to D2 Cal State Dominguez Hills. Winfrey, also a MC transfer who came from Redondo Union High, led the conference in assists average at 6.3 per game while averaging 6.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals. 

Center Nigel Wilson, another transfer from MiraCosta who played his prep ball at Catalina Foothills (Arizona), has signed with NAIA Bellevue University (Nebraska). Wilson was named All-SCC honorable mention after averaging 10.3 points. 6.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. 

Tchengang, Winfrey and Wilson all were PCC Elizabeth Jensen Performance Scholarship winners. Wilson was the state's CalHope Courage Award recipient, overcoming depression to become a successful collegiate student-athlete. 

Guard Jordan Flowers, a member of PCC's 500-point club for his 2-year career as a Lancer, moves on to NAIA Talladega College (Alabama), a HBCU institution. Flowers played his prep ball at Higley, Az. and is originally from Detroit, Mi. As a freshman, Flowers was an All-SCC selection who averaged 14.9 points per game, led the team at a 3.3 assists, and topped the squad in free throw accuracy at 77 percent. He transitioned to a valuable reserve this past season. 

All four Lancers transfers played under head coach Ryan Frazer, who in his first season directing the Lancers saw his team:

  1. Put together an 11-game win streak
  2. Be ranked as high as #13 in the state coaches poll
  3. Play for a chance at the SCC North Division title on the final day of the conference season (losing to 7-time defending champion East Los Angeles)
  4. Earned a #12 seed to the regionals
  5. Won a home playoff game for the first time since 2004, beating Cerro Coso
  6. Upset a #5 seed in San Diego Miramar in Round 2
  7. Finish with a sparkling 22-9 overall record
