Infield Leads Lancers All-SCC Softball Contingent

Sophomore shortstop Kaylee Medrano, freshman second baseman Danielle Ruiz, and frosh third baseman Samantha Diaz were the Pasadena City College softball team selections to the 2019 All-South Coast Conference North Division First Team as voted by coaches at their post-conference meeting at Rio Hondo College Monday.

In the regular season, Medrano batted .383 with team highs in home runs (three), RBI (31), walks (22), on-base percentage (.523) and slugging percentage (.585). From La Mirada High, Medrano led the squad in fielding assists with 75. Ruiz (from South El Monte HS) is PCC's batting leader with a .390 average, a strong .515 on-base percentage, 19 RBI and 12 stolen bases. She also is stellar in the field with a .990 fielding percentage and just one error in 104 chances. Diaz batted .358 with team highs in hits (43), stolen bases (27) and runs scored (37). A product of Monrovia High, Diaz added 12 doubles and 16 RBI.

Making the All-SCC Second Team for the second straight season was leftfielder Nathalia Velasquez (Encino's Birmingham Charter High, .324, one home run, 29 RBI). Also chosen to the Second Team were freshmen in ace pitcher Austyn Helmuth (11-7, five shutouts, 122 innings pitched, 2.47 ERA, San Dimas High), lefty pitcher Vivian Little (7-3, 2.02 ERA, 59 innings, Polytechnic HS), and catcher Jennie Chacon (.329, 14 RBI, and a .984 fielding percentage, Crescenta Valley High). Alise Allen, a two-year letterman outfielder from Burbank's Burroughs High, was given an All-SCC honorable mention.

The players made their honors under the direction of head coach Monica Tantlinger, whose team is 26-14 overall and the second place finisher from the SCC North as it will enter the SoCal Playoffs next week (opponent, date TBA).
