Gary Potts
Title: Assistant Coach
Year: 12th Season in 2023-24

Gary Potts is in his 12th season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. Potts manages the day-to-day operations of the program and serves as a team motivator while organizing office activities, including in-depth scouting reports, and game video management.

Eight years ago, Potts got his first taste of being an interim head coach during a suspension that Joe Peron had to serve at the start of the 2015-16 season. Potts directed the Lancers to a successful 6-2 record before handing the reins back to Coach Peron in early December.

Potts built on his association with Project LEAP in appointing “mentors” for each women’s basketball student-athlete. Other duties include assisting with practice scheduling, coordinating team travel plans, assisting on special events, finding sponsors, and participating the team in community service events.

In his 36th year working at Pasadena City College, Potts has serviced the needs of PCC students and staff throughout his career. Since 1998, he has served as a member of the California Community College Classified Senate Board of Directors and was a PCC Classified Senate President. Working as the college’s network administrator, Potts was honored in 1995-96 by winning the Risser Award for outstanding support staff. In 1994, he was selected Most Outstanding Black Employee. Potts is also part of the Classified Union executive board PCC-CFT.

An honors graduate of Crenshaw High, he later attended PCC as a computer studies major. He received a certificate in business and personal management from the ZOE Leadership Training Center and a certificate in computer/network telephony at Cyber State University. Potts has lived in the City of Pasadena for the past 28 years.
