Women's Swim Prepares For Final 3 Big Meets

The Pasadena City College women's swim team has a small but close-knit group in 2023, but one that has come together with some strong performances of late. With the South Coast Conference dual meet season completed, the Lancers are concentrating on getting to their best times in their final three big meets.

While the Lancers lost to Rio Hondo, 110-108, and host Cerritos, 156-87, PCC captured seven event wins at the final SCC double dual. Arabella Carboni won three events, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (59.36 seconds), the 100 breaststroke (1:16.41), and 100 butterfly (1:04.56) while Nickey Hale scored wins in the 200 backstroke (2:28.81) and 1,000 freestyle (11:50.92).

One of the big standout swims on the day was by Emily Padilla, who won the 200 butterfly (2:47.05) and was a close second in the 500 freestyle (6:21.61). The team also won the 400 freestyle relay (Carboni, Padilla, Berte Montes, and Hale) in 4:15.32.

"Nickey has done whatever we asked in team competition and has a heart of a champion," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "Arabella has demonstrated her versatility and speed once again, winning two different skill events, also peaking in time for the SCC championships. Emily's win in the 200 fly enabled the team competition to stay close. She has been a work horse for the team this year. She has stepped up always taking on the other team's best swimmer."

On Mar. 24, Hale scored three event wins in a double dual v. East Los Angels (lost 141-92) and host Mt. San Antonio (198-60 defeat). Hale won the 500 freestyle (5:45.35), the 1,000 freestyle and 200 butterfly (2:30.75). PCC finished 1-6 in conference dual meets.

PCC begins the Big 3 final meets, beginning with the ELAC/Pasadena Invitational at East Los Angeles College April 7-8. The SCC Championships take place April 20-22 and then the CCCAA State Championships on May 4-6. Those two meets also taking place at ELAC's Swim Stadium.
