One of the greatest women's athletes in pre-Title IX PCC sports history, Carol Spanks excelled in softball, tennis, basketball, and in badminton where she won the state doubles title. She went on to play professional softball and was a 13-time All-American shortstop. She later became head coach at Cal Poly Pomona and UNLV and won 688 games, and twice her teams finished No. 3 in the nation. At the international level, Spanks was head coach of the U.S. National team that won the gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. She was an assistant on the 1994 World Championship gold medal squad. Spanks is a member of both the Amateur Softball Association and National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fames. A bronze bust in her image is part of the Dick Ratliff Court of Champions. She was one of 13 PCC greats immortalized with that honor in 2000.
