After winning the Metropolitan Conference title in the 440-yard intermediate hurdles as a Lancers’ freshman, Grant Niederhaus took his hurdling talents to the next level in 1975. He won the track triple crown in the event, capturing the state title with a then state meet and national record time of 50.8 seconds (he ran a 50.5 for a school record in a '75 regular season meet). He was named conference, Southern California and State Track Athlete of the Year that season. He anchored the 1,600 relay to set a then school record time of 3:10.75. Niederhaus went on to race for UCLA. He tried a valiant attempt to make the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, finishing 14th in the decathlon at the Olympic Trials.
