A member of the 1978 Lancers state champion men's track and field team, Kenny Hays shattered a 40-year-old national record previously by none other than another PCC Hall of Famer--Jackie Robinson--in winning the long jump state title. Hays' leap of 26-feet, 2-3/4 inches, still a PCC record. was the longest standing California state meet record at 24 years before it was broken in 2002 by Mt. San Antonio's Tony Almond. Hays also won the state triple jump title. Hays earned a scholarship at USC and is eighth on the Trojans triple jump and long jump lists.
