Men's Basketball Wins AVC Tourney Championship For 2nd Straight Year

For the second straight year, the state #23-ranked Pasadena City College men's basketball team finished 3-0 to capture the Antelope Valley Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament title played Dec. 6-8.

The Lancers (7-2 overall) downed host Antelope Valley, 65-62, in the championship game of the 8-team tourney on Sunday. 

PCC trailed early 12-3, then 21-11, before cutting it to 28-27 by halftime. In the second half, Darrius Freeman hit a 3-pointer that gave the Lancers the final lead at 50-48 with eight minutes remaining.

Tourney MVP Dylan Swillis scored 21 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots while All-Tourney selections Kaiden Fine (10 points, seven boards, four assists), Cooper Creamer (10 points), and Jalen Vazquez (nine points, six rebounds, four assists) each helped the squad in the finale.

In the semifinals on Dec. 7, Pasadena downed LA Pierce, 70-63, as it bolted to a 13-0 lead, then 35-20 by halftime. Vazquez just missed a triple-double on 14 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists (plus three steals), Swillis totaled 19 points and 12 boards, Freeman added 11 points and three assists, and Brandin Jackson scored 10 off the bench.

The Lancers opened the tourney with a 94-62 rout over Palo Verde as Vazquez picked up his second triple-double of the season as he tallied 13 points, 12 rebounds, and dished out a season-high 14 assists. It's the third that Vazquez handed out 10 or more helpers. He is far and away the state leader in assists at 8.8 per contest.

Also in the win, Swillis poured in 21 points with nine rebounds and three steals, Creamer netted 21 points and seven rebounds, and Fine chipped in 16 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals. 

Next up for PCC is a big test at #6-ranked San Bernardino Valley on Saturday, Dec. 14 in a 1 p.m. matinee tip-off.
