Men's Soccer Season Ends On High Note

The Pasadena City College men's soccer team closed out the 2015 season on November 13 with a 1-0 victory at Los Angeles Harbor College. The Lancers snapped an 8-game winless streak but ended on a 3-game undefeated string (1-0-2) in a strong finish to a difficult year.

PCC finished 2-15-4 overall and in last place in the 8-team South Coast Conference at 2-9-3.

In the Harbor win, Heven Gomez scored the game' s only goal in the 20th minute on an assist by Alex Goddard. Goalie Yusuf Elmasri was brilliant in the shutout as he made seven saves, including blocking a penalty kick in the first half.

Lancers' sophomore midfielder Fausto Espinoza (from Marshall Fundamental High pictured) played in just 13 games for the team due to an injury but was chosen as an All-South Coast Conference First Team selection. Espinoza (pictured) scored a goal and had one assist. On the All-SCC Second Team was Elmasri, a freshman from Arcadia High, who made 127 saves in 21 matches and recorded two shutouts in the team's last three contests. Elmasri finished with a 2.14 goals against average. Frosh defender Jorge Mejia (two goals) picked up an All-SCC honorable mention.

The team's scoring problems were a big reason for the Lancers low finish. PCC scored just 14 goals and were blanked 10 times. Still, PCC head coach Edgar Manvelyan liked the team's late-season play.

"We played so well in the last three games and we had a 2-0 lead against the conference champion (settled for 2-2 tie)," Manvelyan said. "We had some very tough defeats where we controlled the play. I'm encouraged that the team pulled together later in the year and didn't quit."

Forward Artin Almary (Hoover High, Glendale) led the team in scoring with five goals and two assists.
