PCC Men's Track and Field Embarks On 2023 Season

Directed by head coach Innocent Egbunike in his sixth season, the Pasadena City College men's track and field team took part in the 2023 season-opening, South Coast Conference Opener meet held at Cerritos College on Saturday.

Matthew Le, a freshman from Arcadia High who was Pacific League champion as a senior in the high jump, took third in the event with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches, a mark placing him 15th in the state. Newcomer Frank Macias was fourth in the javelin (141-8, 17th in state). Letterman Cameron Ko was seventh in the javelin (127-7) and 14th in the discus (91-0). Jaden Pena was 14th in the discus (93-5). 

Freshman William Southam scored fourth place overall in the 400 meters (51.43 seconds), good enough for a current #16 ranking in the state. Newcomer Winsor Harmon was fifth in the 400, winning his heat in 51.81. 

Sophomore Matthew Karapetyan raced a team-best 10th in the 200 (23.34) and was 10th in the 60 dash (7.35). First-year Jason Du was 15th in the 60 (7.90) and 27th in the 200 (28.05). Harmon was 11th (23.49) and Southam 15th in the 200 (23.74). 

Letterman Etienne Deleage placed fourth in the 3,000 meters (10:55.82) while freshman Youssef Cherqaoui (member of men's cross country team in 2022) scored sixth in the 1,500 (4:38) and seventh in the 800 (2:08.11). Frosh Joshua Ramirez took fifth in the 3,000 (11:11.23) and newcomer Andy Wang was eighth in the event (12:13.14). 

The 4x400 relay of Macali, Cherqaoui, Harmon and Southam was ninth overall at 3:38.97.

PCC will continue training and practices and then take part in the Viking Invitational on Mar. 10 at Long Beach City College.
