The Pasadena City College softball team found the confines of LA Harbor College and the windy conditions to its liking. The Lancers scored a season high in runs and downed the Seahawks, 12-1, in a game called after 4-1/2 innings due to the 8-run rule.
The Lancers (2-9 overall) moved to 2-5 in South Coast Conference play and rose to sixth place in the 9-team league in pounding out 10 hits while drawing six walks and four hit-by-pitches.
PCC exploded for five runs in the second inning, highlighted by designated player Jade Lopez hitting a double to deep left that emptied the bases for three RBI. In the third, the Lancers added six more runs, including a RBI double by leftfielder Lucero Alcaraz and a line run-scoring single to center by catcher Aileen Melendres.
Alcaraz batted 2-for-3 with two extra base hits as she led off the bottom of the first with a triple that reached the fence. Second baseman Alexis Garcia was 2-for-2, Melendres 2-for-3, and centerfielder Marissa Moreno was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.
Genesis Ramirez performed the best pitching outing of the season for the Lancers as she twirled a 5-hitter, allowing just one while walking two batters. She stole a hit by spearing a line drive hit by Natalie Soto in the second. She induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the game turned in by third baseman Mistie Mares to Garcia to first baseman Adriana Valdez.
Mares was 1-for-2 with two RBI at the plate while shortstop Breanna Negrete batted 1-for-2 with a RBI.
"We've had to endure a season where we just won't play in Pasadena this season," said PCC head coach Audriana Gutierrez. "But our players are adjusting and today we really came out of the gate hitting the ball hard. It was nice to see all facets of the game come through with pitching by Genesis, good defense, and solid offense."
On Feb. 28, the Lancers lost at Compton, 14-4, with Melendres hitting a RBI triple.
PCC next plays a non-conference game on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at San Bernardino Valley College, First pitch is 2:30 p.m.
