Women's Cagers Place 2nd At Riverside EOS Tourney

The Pasadena City College women's basketball team placed second in the 8-team, Riverside Earning Our Stripes Tournament (Nov. 9-11) as they upped their overall record to 4-2. The unranked Lancers lost to state #13-rated Irvine Valley in the tourney finals, 66-59, last Friday. 

Pasadena did well in taking third place (2-1) at the PCC Sisterhood of Champions Tournament Nov. 2-4 and had won three straight before the Irvine Valley defeat. The Lancers led IVC, 42-40, after three quarters and were tied at 51-51 as late as 4:51 remaining on a Vanessa Epperson jumper. 

All-RCC EOS Tourney selection Antuanae Garrett scored 24 points, making 9 of 13 from the floor, and grabbed 11 rebounds in the finale while Lamia Daley added 15 points (6-for-6 on free throws) and six boards. Epperson tallied 11 points. Daley fouled out a minute into the fourth quarter which helped changed the momentum the Lasers (3-0 record) way.

In the team's 58-43 semifinals win over host Riverside, Garrett led four Lancers in double digits in scoring with 14 points and "Twin" and the point guard pulled down an astounding 14 rebounds to go with seven assists and six steals. Daley had 12 points and seven rebounds while both Epperson and Crystal Smith scored 10 each. The starting lineup nearly had all five reach double figures but Abigail Saville setteld for nine points plus seven boards.

Epperson dropped in 22 points with seven rebounds to help Pasadena open the tourney with a 67-52 victory over Solano. "MJ" Daley made a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds while Saville netted 19 points (5-for-5 at the line). Garrett added seven points, seven rebounds and four steals.

PCC SISTERHOOD OF CHAMPIONS RECAP

Saville put on a show in the third place final by scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for a place on the All-PCC SoC Tournament Teaam as PCC downed Chaffey, 67-57, on Nov. 4 at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. Daley scored 18 points and Garrett was solid on 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Epperson contributed six points and five steals. 

Chaffey tried to stick around v. the Lancers and were trailing by just six before Jordyn Finley drilled a 3-pointer with a minute left to ice the victory. 

Against state #21 and eventual Sisterhood of Champions title winner Imperial Valley, the Lancers lost a close one, 66-63. The teams were tied 52-52 after three quarters, then eight times the lead changed hands in the fourth period before IVC's Mariel Gutierrez made a trey with 2:57 left for the final lead at 64-63. Daley sank a 3-pointer with 3:27 to go for PCC's last lead at 63-61.

Overall, Saville was dominating at times as she scored 22 points (9-for-14 from the field) with 10 rebounds and five steals. Daley came off the bench to tally 16 points, "JoJo" Finley had nine points (trio of 3s) as did Garrett while Smith had three points and nine rebounds. The team opened with a 76-64 win over Palo Verde, chronicled in the season-opening release.

A little bit of Hutto-Patterson Gym history occurred in the consolation semifinals when Maya Stokes scored a gym record 49 points for Santa Monica to top all players in the 23-year history of the Lancers home arena.

The Lancers will take an extended break through Thanksgiving before returning to the floor with a trip to the Santa Ana Tournament on Nov. 30-Dec. 2. On Dec. 8-9, they return home to host the PCC-Grand Canyon Crossover Tournament.
