Tied with Rio Hondo College, the host Pasadena City College women's soccer team knew time was about to run out in their South Coast Conference game on Tuesday. Hailey Hull played the hero and kicked in the game-winner in the 90th minute as the Lancers celebrated a 1-0 victory to grab second place to themselves in the SCC North Division.
Riley Buck dribbled into the box only to be tripped by a Roadrunners defender to give PCC a penalty kick. Charlie Gallardo's PK bid though was denied on a diving save by RHC goalie Isabel Maldonado.
The ball bounced back into the box with Christina Garcia touching it to Hull, who then promptly buried a short shot into the corner of the net as the state #13-ranked Lancers improved to 12-2-4 overall. PCC is 5-2 in conference play as Rio Hondo dropped into third place in the division at 4-3.
"We were frustrated because we had so many good opportunities but didn't finish," said PCC head coach Terryn Soelberg. "Their #14 (Celeste Dominguez) and goalie kept them in the game. I'm proud of our determination to play to the finish and not give up."
It was the second time that Hull scored a late goal to help PCC win a contest and it was her fifth of the season.
PCC continues to play great at Robinson Stadium, sporting an undefeated 8-0-1 record on the home turf.
Francesca Agliolo made five saves for the team's 10th shutout of the season. The Lancers outshot Rio Hondo, 27-7, but also had four shots blocked alone by Dominguez. In the 87th minute, Bertha Guzman nearly scored but Dominguez blocked her shot at the goal-line.
PCC next hosts East Los Angeles College on Friday, Oct. 27 in a 6:30 p.m. game under the lights at Robinson Stadium.
Agliolo hugs Hull after her game-winning score.
