The Pasadena City College women's soccer team wanted to show off its talent in the home opener on Tuesday and it showed as the Lancers controlled things in a 4-0 victory over Bakersfield at Robinson Stadium. The Lancers improved to 2-0.

Charlie Gallardo got things going in the 12th minute as she took a pass from Monique Arciniega and drove a shot from the 17-yard line high into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Twelve minutes later, Angely Puga found a loose ball and rifled a shot from the 7-yard line for her second goal in two matches. Unfortunately, a Bakersfield defender clipped her on the ankle as the injury forced her out of the remainder of the match.

PCC pressured Bakersfield over the final 25 minutes and it paid off when Claudia Soos lofted a shot also from the 7-yard line into the right corner on an assist by Nadia Aguilar in the 79th minute.

In the game's final minute, Aguilar finished the scoring as she accepted a pass by Presley Gomez and launched a 20-yard drive for her first collegiate goal.

Starting goalie Francesca Agliolo kept Bakersfield from getting on the board with some key stops, including one on a breakaway by Renegades forward Emily Vincent in the 27th minute. She finished with four saves before backup Layla Hoyo took over with six minutes left to complete the combined shutout.

"Bakersfield is a good program, and the game could have just as easily been 2-1 but our goalie made big saves," said PCC head coach Terryn Soelberg. "We had a couple of girls get their first goal of the season today, so that's always exciting. I was really impressed with the play of Arciniega and Francesca in goal."

Gallardo had a number of nifty passes while Hailey Hull drove into the Bakersfield box on several occasions.

The Lancers outplayed the Renegades in the second half, outshooting them 14-2 over the final 45 minutes. Alexa Espinoza-Gutierrez took three shots and had a few high-end scoring chances.

Soelberg herself is a Bakersfield College alumnae who played for the Renegades in 2009.

PCC next hosts Moorpark on Friday, Aug. 30 in a 6 p.m. evening contest.
