Women's Volleyball Earns #2 Seed In South Regionals

The Pasadena City College women's volleyball team didn't play this week, but at times the Lancers might have felt like it went through a 5-set match of emotions in terms of reaping the rewards of one of the best regular seasons in school history.

Sitting on the longest winning streak in the region at 20 matches, matching a program high with 23 victories, and after completing the longest conference run ever in state volleyball at 18-0 to win the South Coast Conference title, the Lancers went through the RPI seeding process formula to earn the #2 seed behind #1 Bakersfield (20-1), the Western State Conference South Division champs (10-0). PCC's status as the #1 team ranked in the South Region for much of the 2021 season and its #3 state rating fell slightly with the news.

However, Pasadena's destiny goes through Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium as the Lancers earned home advantage for Round 1 (and Round 2) in its quest to reach the CCCAA State Championships for the first time since 1995. Next Tuesday, Nov. 23, PCC hosts a Round 1 match v. the highest remaining seed advancing in the region's two Play-In Round contest on Saturday--#15 Canyons hosts #18 Mt. San Jacinto and #16 Cuesta v. #17 Fullerton. PCC is a perfect 12-0 at the HP Gym this season.

If PCC (23-1) wins Round 1, it would play in a Round 2 Regional Final on Saturday, Nov. 27. A victory there would earn the Lancers a trip to the 8-team, state tournament at Fresno City College Dec. 3-5.

Despite the impressive coaching efforts of head coach Mike Terrill and his assistant coaching team of Michael Ledford and Sahara Martinez, Terrill somehow did not earn South Coast Coach of the Year (went to second-place Mt. San Antonio's Samantha Neely) and with Bakersfield's earning the #1 seed, the State SoCal Region Coach of the Year went to the Renegades' Carl Ferreira, one of the state's most respected head coaches and a 16-year veteran at his school.

The tough hits for PCC started earlier this week when the Lancers were also shut out of the two top conference individual awards as Mt. San Antonio picked up both the MVP and Libero of the Year despite going 0-3 v. the Lancers and losing the SCC Tournament title match to Pasadena. (See release on PCC's All-SCC selections later today).
