Phil Gonzalez is the only Pasadena City College track and field athlete to ever be state champion as both a freshman and a sophomore. He swept the 1,500 meters Triple Crown with titles at conference, region and state in both 1996 and 1997. In 1996, his winning time in the state meet was 3:54.17 and his personal best was 3:52.54 to win the '97 SoCal title. He also helped the 1997 cross country team to runner-up at the state meet, placing third individually. Earlier, he won the South Coast Conference championships race. He had the distinction of finishing in the state top 10 in cross country in two striaght seasons (ninth as a freshman). Gonzalez was honored as the PCC Athlete of the Decade for the 1990s.
