(David Telles, Mark Navarro, Kaydon Spens)
For the second consecutive season, Pasadena City College wide receiver/returner David Telles was chosen to the California Community College Football Coaches Association All-State Team. In the history of CCCFCA selections going back to the 1990s, Telles is the first Lancers player to be chosen twice to the elite Region IV squads.
Telles was joined on the 2019 squad by fellow Lancers in sophomore linebacker Mark Navarro and freshman defensive back Kaydon Spens. That's the first time in 12 years that at least three PCC players were selected to the state unit. The Lancers finished at 6-4, the program's first better-than-.500 season in 11 years.
Telles, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound talent from Franklin High, established himself as a reliable receiver and solid kick/punt return specialist. He led the Lancers in receiving in both of his years, including 40 catches this past season for 446 yards (11.2 per reception) and five touchdowns. Telles was picked as a WR on the '19 All-State Team after earning a selection specifically at All-Purpose as a freshman in 2018. In that season, he led the SCFA American Pacific League in all-purpose yardage at 124.9 yards per game. He was the league leader in kick return yards at 626. He finished at PCC with 2,059 all-purpose yards in 20 games, averaging 103 per contest in his Lancers career. His 77 career receptions placed him No. 9 on the PCC all-time list.
Navarro, from West Covina High, made a team-high 63 tackles in nine games (missed one due to injury) and added two interceptions. He had a season-high 13 tackles against APL champion Allan Hancock College. Spens, a 6-1, 180-pound cornerback from Burbank High, led all Lancers freshmen in tackles with 42, made three interceptions and broke up four other passes. A shut-down performer in the secondary, Spens, and Navarro highlighted a PCC defense that completed shutouts in the final two Lancers wins and allowed just two points (an special teams return on a blocked kick conversion) in the last three games.
The All-State trio were guided by PCC head coach Steven Mojarro, defensive coordinator Marc Paramo, offensive coordinator Fred Fimbres, wide receivers coach Brandon McFee, defensive backs coaches Addison Hawthorne and Antyone Sims, linebackers coach Louie Corona, and special teams coordinator Alfred Bejar.
Making All-State is not an easy task as the Lancers have gone various seasons without a single selection
